In high school I snowboarded every chance I got and now I traded that in for my surfboard. Competing at surfing isn’t something that I have any interest in, at least for the time being, yet I do get excited for Boardriders.

The Pacific Rim Boardriders club happens the third Sunday of each month, which happens to be tomorrow. Essentially you show up hang out with a bunch of awesome people, surf a heat (or hopefully a few), learn how to judge heats, and just generally have a good time with all the other people you usually see out there in the water. Its a really cool environment with no pressure on performance.

These events are organized by one of the athletes from this gym, Shannon Brown. I asked him if he would be kind enough to write me a paragraph summing it up. “Pacific rim boardriders club is a club devoted to surfing and surf culture in the pacific north west. Every month we run a club contest with several divisions for all ages and skill levels. It’s a great opportunity for surfers in the area to come out and learn a little about how to compete and how to judge surfing. We also see each event as a great way for all surfers in the area to socialize and get to know each other. Most importantly it’s a place for us to teach the next generation about our sport and the ocean. Share our love and respect of surfing and the thing that provides it to us.

Pretty legit.

If you’ve never surfed a heat before I encourage you to come try it out. I was skeptical and nervous at first but really ended up enjoying it. Who knows you may find you really enjoy competing. Heats start at 10am, and this month it looks like it will be at North Chesterman beach. Even if you don’t surf, feel free to come hang out, you may want to bring a beach chair though. Hope to see some of you out there!
